I have to reluctantly admit I have become a bit of a Reality TV Junky. For years I tried to deny it- then I realized that I, in reality, watch it quite a bit. I LOVE Face Off on the SyFy Channel. But somehow a competition reality show about special effects make up artist seems to work well with my geeky personality. I actually set the DVR for Deadliest Catch and don’t even think about calling when a Hoarders: Buried Alive marathon is on.

I do try to draw the line at shows that glorify horrendous behavior on the part of people who should really know better. I have a strict ban on Toddlers and Tiaras in my house. Not so much that I have a thing against kids beauty pageants but because of the disgusting way EVERYONE on that show behaves and that we pass this off as entertainment. So I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise that I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I saw the first promos for the Honey Boo Boo Show coming to TLC.
If you are not Familiar with Little Miss Honey Boo Boo, we were first introduced to her on …wait for it….Toddlers and Tiaras. The show that mistakes rude and snarky for cute and precocious and glorifies the absolute worst in parenting. I understand that people (myself included) can’t turn away from a train wreck but come on, this show is a disaster.- An overbearing, pushy cow of a mother, and rude and snaky (oops excuse me…precocious) Honey Boo Boo, a dad who appears who wants to be ANYWHERE but with his family and so on.
Just in case you have missed it…here is the extended trailer
It is guaranteed to join the ranks of the worst reality shows ever, which in my opinion includes
- Toddlers and Tiaras
- Dance Moms
- Jersey Shore
- My Super Sweet 16
- Bridal Plasty
But apparently I am not alone in my disdain for these shows. You can check out some other opinions here
Reality is a two sided coin. For every train wreck of a family or person or institution, are people who have the ability to educate and really inspire. How come we never see shows about them?
