So has this ever happened to you???
My cell phone rang last night right before dinner. The display on the screen told me the caller was “Unknown”
Me: Hello this is Deborah how may I help you
Computer on the other end of the phone: For security reasons, your MasterCard has been deactivated, to reactivate this number please press 1
Me: CLICK!!!!
Obviously this was a fishing scam by someone to get my credit card number. Though, I never pressed one and cannot definitively say what would have happened, I assume if I had gone through with it, I would have been asked to enter my account number and bingo-bango it would be open season on my credit rating and credit card.
I did call the company I have a Master Card with a verified that there was nothing wrong with the account and for good measure had them issue me a new card with a new number- just in case some DID have my number.
Long story short…NEVER give your account number out to anyone who calls you- especially if the caller is completely unidentifiable. If it seems legit, just tell them you will call the customer service number you have on file and the caller should be fine with that. Don’t call a number someone has given you or follow an email link that has been sent to you. These scammers have become very tech savy and spotting fakes has become tricky.
