  All Day Lions Club Rain Barrel Fundraiser   As a new fundraiser this Spring, the Springfield Noon Lions Club is selling rain barrels at discounted prices. Plastic 55-gallon rain barrels are available in black, blue, grey, and terra cotta for $70. Oak 54-gallon rain barrels are available for $155 if they are unfinished and $170 if they are refinished. Accessories such as downspout diverters and pedestals are also available. The brochure and order form can be viewed at www.springfieldnoonlions.com. Color photographs of the rain barrels are available at www.upcycle-products.com. Orders will be taken from April 1 until May 10. Rain barrels will be available for pick up on May 18 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 829 South 11th Street, Springfield (at the former Glass Specialty location). Customers of City Water, Light & Power may be eligible for a $25 rebate.
  All Day Dog Days of Spring   Dogs are faithful, loyal, and love their owners without question. Whether young or old, rich or poor, clever or dull, most dog owners love their pets as much, if not more as their family members. The upcoming “Dog Days of Spring” event will be hosted to honor these beloved dogs and their special family connection. “Dog Days of Spring” event captures a photographic portrait of your family dog. A portrait you are sure to treasure a lifetime. This event will consist of a portrait session of a family dog with session fees being donated to the Animal Protective League (APL). APL is partnering with Terry Farmer Photography this spring to promote awareness and raise funds for APL’s important animal welfare work. APL is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for ill, injured, abused or homeless animals, and coordinating the adoption of those animals with responsible pet owners. APL also operates a high quality, lowcost spay/neuter clinic that is helping to end animal overpopulation. APL gives priority to sick and injured strays in our community. Each year, with the help of generous donors APL is able to house, rehabilitate, and adopt out, over 1,500 animals every year! Supporting “Dog Days of Spring” and APL are local personalities including Justin Fowler (The State JournalRegister), Rick Brandt (Brandt Consolidated), Jeff Ball (Hanson Professional Services), Lucy Bagot (Ace Hardware), Bob Ritz (St. John’s Hospital), and Susan Koch (University of Illinois Springfield) to name a few.   All Day Amateur Photography Contest   his photo contest is open to all amateur photographers including a youth division for ages 12 and under. Photos must be taken within Washington Park. Prizes will be awarded in youth, young adult, and adult divisions. Photos will be displayed in the Exhibit Hall from May 1 through May 19. Phone or stop and pick up an entry form. DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ENTRIES: Friday, April 19, 2013 The Washington Park Botanical Garden, along with PSC Digital, will be having their Annual Amateur Photography Contest. All entries must be submitted by Monday, April 19, 2013 at 4 p.m. in order to be included in the contest and display. The photographs will be on display from May 1 through May 19. 1. An amateur photographer is anyone who derives less than 5% of their income from photography. 2. Photos may be taken with any make of camera and entries may be in black and white or color, but must be taken within Washington Park and have botanical/nature subject matter. 3. Photographs containing subject matter deemed inappropriate will not be permitted or eligible in the contest. 4. Prints can be no larger than 11”X 14” and must be matted on an 11”X 14” foam board. 5. If submitting a photograph that has been framed please remove it from its frame before submitting. 6. Limited to one entry per participant. 7. There are three categories: Adult, Young Adult (13 to 17 yr. olds), and Junior (12 yr. olds and younger). 8. PSC Digital graciously will be donating prize gift certificates to their store for the winners. Entries can be delivered to the Botanical Garden, 1740 W. Fayette, Monday – Friday, 12 pm to 4 pm or Saturday & Sunday 12 pm to 5 pm. Entries may also be mailed to 1740 W. Fayette, Springfield, IL 62704. All entries must be at the Garden by April 19, 2013 in order to be eligible for the contest and display.   9:00AM 4:00PM Lincoln Memorial Garden’s Spring Wildflower Sale   The Garden’s two annual wildflower sales will be held the weekends of April 13th – 14th and May 11th – 12th. The time for both sales is 9 a.m to 4 p.m on Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. On Saturday and Sunday, April 13th – 14th, woodland wildflowers and trees will be the main attraction. The woodland wildflowers love those shady spots that many other flowers don’t like and will give you years of enjoyment as they reappear each spring. You can choose from among bluebells, trillium, woodland poppies, bloodroot, mayapples, jack-in-the-pulpits, wild geranium, several varieties of ferns, and more. Prices range from $4 to $6 per plant. Along with the wildflowers, a wide variety of trees and shrubs will be available at this sale. These woody species are bare root native stock, between 2 feet and 5 feet tall, and priced from $5 to $15. Trees and shrubs offered for sale include redbud, dogwood, witch hazel, sugar maple, swamp white and shumard oak, river birch, silverbell, and more. On Saturday and Sunday, May 11th – 12th, prairie wildflowers take center stage. More than two dozen species of wildflowers will be on sale, including such popular favorites as purple coneflower, royal catchfly, and butterfly weed. Prairie enthusiasts might enjoy adding queen of the prairie, lead plant, or prairie smoke to their garden or restoration. There will be plenty of choices and most wildflowers will be priced around $5 for a second-year plant with a great root system.
