His interests include Midwest history and he is producing a series of large oil paintings to commemorate the Springfield to Peoria Road, which was recently designated Historic by the Illinois General Assembly. Mr. DeWitt’s work is a copyrighted series which was commissioned by local historian Gregory Laun and cannot be reproduced. Middletown was founded in 1832 on the well established stage coach mail route and State Road linking Springfield and Peoria. Leading north from Springfield, Abraham Lincoln traveled this route through Middletown for 21 years on the 8th Judicial District Circuit. The Dunlap House was built in 1837 and can today be visited by appointment. This structure was chosen to depict stage coach inns along the route for Mr. DeWitt’s art. The Dunlap House will be open to the public during the homecoming. The Knapp Library/Museum building was constructed of brick in 1840 by Colby Knapp. The structure was his home, general store, pharmacy and where he served as postmaster. The museum/library will be open to the public during the homecoming, and is where Mr. DeWitt’s art can be viewed on June 22.
